I’d been searching for a centralized storage solution on and off for a few years, but I finally got serious about it in the Summer of 2010.  While searching around, I came across FreeNAS (http://freenas.org/) an open source appliance that supports a wide variety of hardware solutions while providing an incredible, flexible array of services for sharing and protecting data.
