Dendrobates tinctorius “Bakhuis” dart frog

My particular Dendrobates tinctorius “Bakhuis” specimens were captive bred by Sean Stewart at Herpetologic. These dwarf dart frogs are from the Bakhuis Mountains in Western Suriname.

They are a striking frog with a black base color and yellow markings on their torso. Their legs are blue with black spots. They the most reclusive tinctorius morph I keep. However their diminutive size (max SVL of ~40 mm) makes a periodic sighting quite rewarding:

Dendrobates tinctorius “Bakhuis” breeding

This is a short video of two Dendrobates tinctorius “Bakhuis” male frogs wrestling for dominance while competing for the attention of their females. You can see the males calling as they wrestle if you watch their throats closely. You can see the females monitoring the males, with the first female on the upper ledge as the clip begins, and the second female in the background watching:

This is a longer clip of the male Dendrobates tinctorius “Bakhuis” fighting. The entire incident lasted approximately 10 minutes:

I separated the males for the night, and returned the one I pulled in the morning. We did not see such aggression again after regrouping, but we have seen calling and a few stare downs. All frogs are doing well and they are closely monitored. Check back for additional breeding information as our group develops.

Selected photos of Dendrobates tinctorius “Bakhuis” dart frog

Here are photos of two of my four Bakhuis dart frogs. You can see that one of the four dominates the photos. This is the boldest of the four and I suspect it is a female.

Dendrobates tinctorius “Bakhuis” vivarium photos

These are a variety of vivarium photos taken of the enclosure housing a group of 4 Bakhuis dart frogs. This is one of my more densely planted vivariums. My Bakhuis are fairly reclusive for tinctorius, and all four are rarely seen together. Their shy nature complicates catching a glimpse of them in such a well grown vivarium. This is one of my favorite vivariums, so I have been reluctant to remove any plants.
